There is a town in Illinois who is determined to get you to make a diversion from exploring Route 66. So most people know that Route 66 starts (and ends) in Chicago and travels south through Illinois into Missouri and St Louis and that there are murals, curios and sights to see. If you consider a two hour diversion to a little town called Casey there are some really…..and I mean REALLY BIG THINGS to see here.
Casey boasts 12 of the ‘World’s Largest’ things according to the Guinness Book of Records. There are also other big things across its streets.
Some of the World’s Largest items to see include are: Mailbox, Gavel, Wind Chime and Rocking Chair. In the Big Things category are: Taco, Pencil, Knitting Needles, Piggy Bank and Pizza Cutter. In fact there are over 30 different items to discover. All of the attractions are free and some you can actually climb into, such as the mail box or swing in the bird cage.
Casey is located on I-70 between St Louis and Indianapolis and has a small community in East Central Illinois. It is a great stopping point for travellers. Most of the ‘Big Things’ and ‘World’s Largest’ are close to the cross-roads of Main Street (Old National Road) and Central Avenue (Illinois Route 49). It is very hard to miss because this junction has the only traffic lights in town. There is plenty of public parking to be able to view the attractions and visit the local shops. The golf tee and pitchfork are a little further out. The visitor centre is conveniently located in town and there are tours available.
