On my latest visit to America it was evident that the tension was mounting between the Republicans and the Democrats. Being in Texas it was pretty clear which colour Texan’s vote it was also obvious that merchandisers were put on the back foot when Joe Biden pulled out of the race to allow Kamela Harris to be the Democratic candidate.
At DFW there was plenty of Donald Trump bobble heads, hats and chocolate bars. Of course there were t-shirts but nothing for the opposition. Whilst on the road between Round Rock – TX and Taylor we did see a roadside banner for Harris and Walz which surprised us because we hadn’t seen any Trump and Vance ones. There were a few Vote instructional posters and t-shirts to encourage residents to participate but for all the media interest it did seem quite low-key.
At a travel stop at Austin-Bergstrom airport there was a display of Trump bottle openers some with magnetic backs and there was the Biden version which was evidence that the memorabilia produced had been taken unawares, admittedly like the rest of us, that Biden was to pull out.
It was at JFK terminal 8 that we finally saw a table full of both Trump vs Harris collectables at usual ridiculous airport rates. I mean $3.99 for 50g of milk chocolate with either a Trump or Harris wrapper.
I must admit though I did buy a Hilary Clinton T-shirt in 2016 only because it was 50% off and someone took my photo with both a Hilary and Trump standee. That was the day after the election that year and the stores we left with a lot of stuff to shift especially with Hilary on it.
