On Route 333 before it joins Route 66 is a quarter of a mile stretch of road that will play ‘America the Beautiful’ to you.

Located Eastbound on Route 33 between markers 4 and 5 close to exit 170. There used to be signage with a musical note to show the start of the experience and that you had to slow to 45 mph to gain the best sound. The signage has gone and parts of the asphalt have been resurfaced so the full experience is no longer continuous. By driving at 45 mph over the rumble strips you can hear ‘America the Beautiful’.

It was a collaboration between National Geographic and the New Mexico Department of Transportation to make the drive near the town of Tijeras – NM more interesting back in 2014 and to promote a safe driving speed. 

The cost of replacing the rumble strips and the maintenance of the asphalt resulted in the signage being removed.
