Missing from my state visits is Nebraska and I finally found something that could…repeat could give me an excuse to visit one day. It is of course in the middle of nowhere and 250 miles from the closest international airport in Denver and at least 50 miles from a Walmart. I use that as a gauge to remoteness, if that makes sense.

Dedicated on the Summer Solstice in 1987 and created by Jim Reinders this is as close to the measurements of the original Stonehenge near Salisbury in England and is created of 38 vintage American cars and trucks. All of them are painted in stone grey. Some are secured in pits over 5 feet deep boot end down and others welded into place. It proved so popular that a visitor centre opened in 2006 to service the approximately 60,000 visitors from all over the world.

The nearest town is Alliance and surprisingly it has a choice of hotels and restaurants. I looked long and hard at the map and the tricky thing is that where do you go from there? I guess the most logical destination is Mount Rushmore National Memorial but I just saw that there is Chimney Rock only 54 miles south of Carhenge.

Chimney Rock is a slender monolith that towers over 300 feet above the North Platte River Valley. Adults entrance is only $3.00

For me to see my missing states is going to take some very careful planning at strategy to work out the most economical, time wise and distance involved to get most missing states in one visit.
