On my travels I have often been drawn to the attraction of Lighthouses. Possibly imagining all the drama and nature that they have witnessed over the years. Here are some of the lighthouses that I have seen in North America. Continue reading Lighthouses – USA Road Trips by Max
Chicago Illinois is the start or end of Historic Route 66 and there are signs that officially show the BEGIN or END of the 2448 mile long journey. So for that ‘must’ have memory please see below!
Begin Historic Route 66 Sign
Location: E Adams Street near the junction with Michigan Avenue opposite the Art Institute of Chicago.
There are a few reserved car parking spaces in the No Parking Zone outside of the Consulate General of the Philippines that outside of operating hours you can park for a few moments to take a photo or stick a sticker on the sign.
In fact there is a second Begin sign just at the crossing of E. Adams Street and Michigan Avenue by the traffic lights that has hardly any stickers on it. So don’t be disappointed that the Begin sign a few yards further back is virtually obliterated by previous Route 66’ers embarking on the 2448 mile road trip.
End Historic Route 66 Sign
Location: 98-66 E. Jackson Street.
Located on the second light pole west of the intersection with S. Michigan Avenue the End sign has more parking opportunities for a short stop to take a photograph. The sign is positioned higher up and is relatively free from stickers.

Ebookers & Avis How difficult is it to get a resolution to an obvious set up error? Actually after nearly four hours in ‘chat’ with four different Ebookers/Expedia agents and an email to Avis it seems to be impossible. I booked and paid for an economy car at Chicago O’Hare for 24 hours for £42.49. The confirmation from Ebookers gave me the Avis reservation number. … Continue reading Rental Car Complaint

Day 9 – Fargo, North Dakota – State 47 It seemed a long time coming but today was finally here and I was going to step into State 47. I had to drop of the hire car at O’Hare and gave myself plenty of time to drive the 5 miles to the Car Rental Facility. The signposting wasn’t that clear and I had to make … Continue reading States 46 & 47 (Chicago IL – Fargo ND) – Days 9 & 10
Day 7: Kenosha – Milwaukee After failing big time in getting to see Lake Michigan when I went out for something to eat the night before I had big plans for today. It was Sunday and there is always a different atmosphere in the air. The traffic is lighter and everything seems more sedate. I guess you don’t have to be up for commuting and … Continue reading States 46 & 47 (Kenosha WI – Milwaukee WI – Chicago IL) Days 7 & 8
Today was an early start and the parting of our waves. My daughter was to be dropped off at Terminal 1 O’Hare for her United Airlines flight back to London Heathrow. After driving together for 1300 miles and across Illinios, Iowa and Nebraska today was going to be all about the ‘Windy City’ of Chicago. ‘Our kinda town Chicago is!’ I travelled out with two … Continue reading States 46 & 47 (Chicago IL – Kenosha WI) – Day 6
The hotel between Bannockburn and Deerfield was hosting Naval Graduates and their families. I think the graduation was going on all week and there was a steady stream of very proud parents and grand-parents coming and going from the hotel. The day was going to be broken up with some essential (more) shopping and a visit up the Lake Michigan shore to Waukegan IL. This … Continue reading States 46 & 47 (Deerfield IL – Waukegan IL) – Day 5
Setting off early to try and maximise our time in the Chicago area the journey time was 4 hours 15 minutes to do 288 miles. Taking a break at Aurora to visit the outlet mall there. The road was reasonably clear except for the continuous smoke that clouded the scenery. Apparently the smoke had been drifting southwards across from the wildfires that had been plaguing … Continue reading States 46 & 47 (Altoona IA – Deerfield IL) – Day 4
After the excitement of reaching Omaha on Day 2 today promised to be at a more sedate pace. The area around the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs has some interesting art installations and is well worth the stroll around the campus. I would think that this venue has to compete with Omaha across the Missouri River. In an effort to see the Omaha Welcome sign … Continue reading States 46 & 47 (Council Bluffs IA – Altoona IA) – Day 3
