Planning in Progress – States 46 & 47 September ’23

This time next week I will have checked in for my flight to Chicago. I thought that I would have another look at the hotels that I have booked to see if it is worth changing the accommodations. When I originally booked I chose to pay the few pounds extra to cancel the reservation in case I needed to change anything and a quick search proved fruitful.

It is unusual that as the arrival date gets nearer that the price decreases but two of the hotels have reduced their rates from May when I originally booked and are still allowing me to pay at the hotel rather than in advance. So I have cancelled the first reservations and simply re-booked exactly the same room type and saved money.

In order to be able to drop of my luggage at the UPS Store the night before I fly to Fargo, ND I also changed the hotel to be nearer to O’Hare to allow plenty of time to drop of the car and get to the terminal.

Whilst I am in Fargo I won’t have the luxury of a car so I was delighted to discover that the Fargo & Moorhead Visitors Center is only a 15-20 minute from my hotel. I thought it was downtown and that was proving to be a challenge to get in time because it closes at 16.00. So I will get to see the ‘Woodchipper’ from the Fargo movie after all.

The biggest saving is on the rental car and by keeping an eye on how much the exact same dates and car type is the rate has dropped from £356 to £284 as the pick up date draws ever closer.

Fuel prices on Autoblog appear to be more expensive than in Texas on my last road trip but also vary quiet a bit between different cities and states.

On average Illinios seems to be the more expensive around $4.95 and Kenosha, WI comes in over a dollar cheaper. Of course because it is sold in gallons the price difference isn’t that significant for filling up a tankcompared to the fuel sold in litres over here in the UK.

Including visiting States 46 – Nebraska and 47 – North Dakota I will also be travelling into Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. I will see the Mississippi and Missouri rivers along the way as well as Lake Michigan.

It will be a busy 10 days but worth the time I have invested in researching and planning. So keep an eye on new posts in the next few weeks about this latest road trip by Max!
