Portland, OR – Voodoo Doughnut

Man vs Food was on the television. I guess it was an old episode but it was in Portland, Oregon. We visited the original store in downtown Portland because of Man vs Food. We got there around 11.00 in the morning having found parking space a couple of roads over. It wasn’t a busy time but judging by the barriers that surround the store they cater for very busy periods. We asked about the queues and apparently it isn’t unknown for it to snake around the block at 4.00 in the morning as it is open 24 hours a day.

The walls and ceiling were decorated with slogans and framed posters and is predominately pink. There were glass cabinets with revolving displays of donuts of every description and colour combination. What struck us was the prices were really cheap and they didn’t seem to take the visitor for granted. The voodoo donut is the signature item with a pretzel stabbing the donut through it’s jammy heart.

I had a chocolate cake and Zoe had a pothole that looked like a tarmac road with yellow lines. It is a bit of fun and suits Portland down to the ground.

There are stores popping up in very touristy areas now such as Universal City Walk in both Hollywood and Orlando.
